The Casey Seals Open Water Swim Award runs every year for open water swim events from 1 May to 30 April in the following year.
This is open to all club members.
If you're currently not a member but you'd like to participate, visit the Membership page for more information about how to join and to download a brochure about the club and Masters Swimming.
You don't have to register for the award - we check the results for each event listed in the Casey Seals Open Water Swim Calendar for all club members.
We retrieve your results from the events listed in the Victorian OWS calendar and enter them into our points calculator. Any other events that you participate in can also be included if you send me the details of the event.
The progressive points will be displayed here during the season.
We have developed our own formula that attempts to be as fair as possible across ages, gender and ability. It's not always the young gun swimmers that win.
Points are calculated for every open water swim event that you do during the season. This includes organised events that are not a race and are more of a social swim, but excludes regular training-style swims.
The points for each swim are the total of 2 components:
Your time is compared to the winner of your category:
Category winning time / Your time
Your category placing is compared to the number of entrants in your category:
1 - ( Your placing / No. entrants )
If you don't wear a wetsuit in a race where wetsuits are allowed (most swims in Victoria allow wetsuits), your score is increased by a "non-wetsuit factor". With a wetsuit, top swimmers will be about 30 seconds per kilometre faster and upto 2 minutes for slower swimmers.
Your total score is calculated as:

To participate in the OWS Award, you must be a registered club member.
All previous members must re-register before 1st February otherwise you will not get any points for swims that were done before you re-register.
New members will not get any points for swims done before joining so you should join at the start of the summer swim season for maximum points.
